It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Center for Accessibility and Safety for an Aging Population (ASAP). In this our Fall 2016 newsletter, you will read about news and events at the Center, on the various activities on research, education and outreach programs. Dr. Walter Boot’s outstanding work is the focus of our research spotlight. ASAP’s various outreach activities are presented, including the Annual Transportation Day. Awards and recognitions for ASAP faculty are also reported.
Third Annual Transportation Day
The ASAP Center held its Third Annual Transportation Day at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering on Friday, November 4, 2016. More than 125 community members, researchers, and K-12 students enjoyed presentations and demonstrations related to the Safety and Mobility in the Community theme.

This project identified the risks bicyclists face and also evaluated the effectiveness of the traffic countermeasures. With focus on aging bicyclists and the use of bicycle lanes, the Driving Simulator-based study performed a detailed evaluation, including factors related to passing distances.

Walter (Wally) R. Boot is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in Visual Cognition and Human Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. His research interests are broad and include how humans perform and learn to master complex tasks (especially tasks with safety-critical consequences such as driving), how age influences perceptual and cognitive abilities vital to the performance of these tasks, and the potential of technological interventions to improve the well-being, independence, and cognitive functioning of older adults.

ASAP participated in the STEM Outreach for At-Risk Youth (SOAR) program at Florida State University. The SOAR program facilitates the involvement of undergraduate students in developing and implementing mentoring programs that expose underrepresented youth to science and technology.
